Learning Difficulties OT

Manchester OT can provide many occupational therapy services to benefit our clients with learning difficulties. These include:

Assessment

The treatment process is evidence based, holistic and client-centred. During the assessment the occupational therapist will consider how an individual's condition and impairment affects their ability to undertake daily activities such as personal care and domestic activities, as well as work, education, leisure and social pursuits. The individual's environment is also assessed. The occupational therapist will also consider the physical impacts e.g. co-ordination, strength, grip etc, and the psychological impacts e.g. memory, concentration and problem solving as well as interpersonal skills.

The initial assessment is completed by gathering information, from the person and/or their carer, both verbally and by observation. After collecting the initial information, the occupational therapist then selects the most appropriate assessment tool and method for the person.

Goal Setting

Agreed goals are then set between the individual and the occupational therapist that reflect the person's interests and values and that are achievable. These may include activities to work on basic skills and skills to be able to live as independently as possible.

Aids and Adaptations

If required the occupational therapist can prescribe and provide aids or adaptations to the environment that would make activities easier for the individual and promote independence.

Personal Skills

In order to improve on personal and social skills, the occupational therapist can work on anxiety management techniques, assertiveness and social skills training.

Helping to Plan for Major Life Changes

If an individual is planning to undertake a major life change i.e. moving to live independently or beginning work or education, the occupational therapists at Manchester OT can work with them and support them through this to help make the transition as smooth and successful as possible.

Carers and Family

Our occupational therapists also provide advice and support to the family and carers of people with learning disabilities.
