A splint is used to control or support a body part and can be used in the treatment of a variety of conditions.
Aims of Splints
- Improvement or maintenance of joint alignment
- Prevention of development of sort tissue deformity or contractures
- Facilitation of healing
- Joint protection
- Pain relief
- Supporting weakened muscles
Splints can be made to place the joint in a position of rest, function or to immobilise the joint completely. The occupational therapists at Manchester OT can fabricate specialised splints or prescribe readymade splints. They will assess whether a splint is needed and the best splint for your problem. They will then continually monitor the splint and provide advice and instructions on its use.
