Hydrotherapy

Manchester OT offers group and 1:1 hydrotherapy sessions tailored to the needs of the individual.

Hydrotherapy is used to treat a range of different conditions and injuries and is a great alternative to land based treatments. Our pool has wheelchair access, a tracking hoist and fully equipped changing facilities which allows us to meet the needs of different individuals.

Benefits of hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy can be beneficial for the treatment of adults and children. The water in hydrotherapy pools are of a higher temperature than those of regular swimming pools, and therefore uses the principles of heat and buoyancy as the basis for effective treatment.

Some of the benefits of this type of treatment include:

  • Heightened sensory feedback
  • Reduced joint stiffness
  • Strengthen muscles
  • Relaxes muscles
  • Improved balance and coordination
  • Improved strength and endurance
  • Improves psychological relaxation

Our occupational therapists assist an individual in the water to facilitate their movements with hands on therapy. Hands on therapy helps to provide stability and added support to those with balance and coordination difficulties, and really works the body against the gravity of water. Antigravity positioning is great for the development of core stability and muscle strength, particularly the shoulder girdle.

The water also provides an individual with an experience that heightens the sensory feedback processes within their body and can help an individual be more aware of where their body is in space.

Who can benefit from hydrotherapy?

Both children and adults can benefit from hydrotherapy as a therapeutic intervention. Those with the following conditions and difficulties in particular may benefit:

  • Developmental co-ordination disorder (DCD/dyspraxia)
  • Developmental delay
  • Neurological difficulties
